A Holiday Today – Hawkes Bay Anniversary Day

Filed under: On this day — by my3boysandi @ 3:23 pm

1858 Napier Population 343 Souls

Declared a Province in its own right

would be another 6 years before the settlers settled in Hastings

Prior to this time the area was administered by the Wellington Provincial Government.
Disgruntled by neglect and the delay in issuing land licenses, the settlers broke away
from the Wellington administration.
